Growing

  • Forest layer: Shrub.
  • Growth habit & lifespan: Fast-growing, semi-woody shrub, short-lived perennial, usually productive for 2-5 years.
  • Size: 1.5-3m.
  • Site preference: Full sun, wide soil tolerance including poor soil, drought tolerant once established, frost tender.
  • Water needs / drought tolerance: Drought tolerant once established.
  • Fruiting / flowering season: Yellow flowers, followed by pods of edible peas.
  • Propagation: Seed.
  • Harvesting technique: Peas, fresh or dried — a genuine food crop as well as a support species.

Permaculture Function

  • Permaculture functions: A strong nitrogen fixer and fast biomass/mulch producer, functioning as a nurse plant or windbreak for younger, slower-establishing plantings while also being a genuinely productive food crop in its own right.
  • Wildlife value: Pollinator value.
  • Edibility / medicinal use: Yes, the peas are a real food crop.
  • Companion notes: A strong nurse-crop choice for a new food forest block — fixes nitrogen and gives wind shelter while slower canopy trees establish.

Safety & Control

  • Toxicity: Not toxic — cooked peas are a normal food, and raw legume seeds in general are best cooked.
  • Control method: Not applicable, retain and encourage, though being frost tender it may need replacing after a hard winter.
