Growing

  • Forest layer: Shrub.
  • Growth habit & lifespan: Fast-growing, short-lived perennial/shrub.
  • Size: 1-2m.
  • Site preference: Full sun, disturbed ground, wide soil tolerance.
  • Water needs / drought tolerance: Drought tolerant.
  • Fruiting / flowering season: Small white-cream flower clusters, followed by a distinctive inflated, spiny seed pod (the "balloon" the common name refers to).
  • Propagation: Seed, wind-dispersed via a silky coma inside the pod, similar to other milkweed-family species.
  • Harvesting technique: Not applicable.

Permaculture Function

  • Permaculture functions: A recognised monarch butterfly host plant, a genuine ecological value, though this has to be weighed against its toxicity and weed status on a property running or planning to run animals.
  • Wildlife value: Monarch butterfly host plant — if any specimens are retained, they should be sited well away from any area animals graze.
  • Edibility / medicinal use: Not edible.
  • Companion notes: If keeping a specimen or two deliberately for monarch habitat, site it well clear of livestock or pet grazing areas.

Safety & Control

  • Toxicity: Toxic to livestock — the milky sap contains cardiac glycosides, similar to other milkweed-family members.
  • Control method: Hand-pull or cut before seed pods form and split. Bag pods if already present. Given the toxicity risk, most infestations on a property running animals warrant full removal rather than partial retention.
